The exceptional location

The Prenzlauer Berg district is located in the centre of Berlin and probably represents the largest intact area of Wilhelminian style architecture in Europe. Affectionately known as “Prenzelberg” by its residents, the district has developed into a trendy area for young families, artists and the professions. The image of “Prenzelberg” is characterised by the literary scene, cultural initiatives and student life, although its mid-nineteenth century origins were as a working-class district.

The late nineteenth-century apartment buildings in the direct proximity of the Kastaniengärten quarter have largely been restored and retained.

Kastanienallee is the oldest street in the Prenzlauer Berg district. The adjacent street, Schwedter Straße, forms the boundary between the administrative districts of “Mitte” and “Prenzlauer Berg”. The Arkonaplatz, the Zionskirchplatz and the Kollwitzplatz squares are all in the immediate vicinity, lending the neighbourhood its distinct flavour. This is an area where the best aspects of both districts are on view. There are child-friendly squares, and the large number of cafés, bars and restaurants fulfils virtually any gastronomic desire.

This central and varied location provides a particularly good environment for families with children. There are large playgrounds, such as at the Teutoburger Platz or the Arkonaplatz, plenty of child day-care centres and the schools within the immediate neighbourhood enjoy an excellent reputation. The John Lennon Grammar School in Zehdenicker Straße has partner schools worldwide, even including one in Japan. The German-French European School Berlin-Mitte (primary school) is at the Arkonaplatz. There are several supermarkets nearby to cater for daily shopping needs. The underground railway and the tram are easily accessible.
